Wen-Sinn Yang

The Taiwanese cellist was born in Bern in 1965 and studied with Claude Starck in Zurich and with Wolfgang Boettcher in Berlin. Further artistic stimulation was received at master classes with Janos Starker and David Geringas. At the age of 24, he became first principal cellist in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

After winning the first prize at the Geneva International Competition in 1991, he made regular guest appearances in Taiwan, Japan and in the capitals of Europe, in addition to performing in concerts led by such noteworthy conductors as Lorin Maazel, Sir Colin Davis, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Semyon Bychkov and Yuri Temirkanov. Wen-Sinn Yang appears regularly as a guest performer at several music festivals, including those in St. Moritz, Davos, Biel and Dresden.

With the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Lorin Maazel, Yang has made many soloist appearances, including the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Orchestra's "Musica viva" concerts, the European premiere of Lorin Maazel's Cello Concerto "Music for Cello and Orchestra". Additional performances followed in Italy, Spain, and in the USA and he performed at the opening concert of the "Cultural Olympia" in Atlanta. In 1997, Yang was entrusted with two world premieres: the cello concerts of Huang-Long Pan in Taipei and Kevin Volans in Munich.

Yang's broad repertoire is well documented on several CDs. For La Vergne Classics he has recorded the Solo Suites by J.S. Bach and the cello concerts by Karl Davidov and P.I. Tchaikovsky (Rococo-Variations). The cello concerts by Dvorak and Schumann are issued by Sonoris Records, New York. The new recording of 4 cello concerts by Luigi Boccherini (ARTS Music) utilizes the advanced technology of 24-bit/96 kHz and will be released as DVD as well.

Wen-Sinn Yang is renowned as a prominent pedagogue. He has taught at the music university in Saarbrücken as well as giving master classes throughout Germany and Switzerland.
