AFFLATUS QUINTET

The Afflatus Quintet has been on music scene since 1995. Its members seek to enrich as well as continue the strong tradition of Czech wind music, pursuing this goal successfully since their first public performance. Each performer holds numerous prizes from national and international competititons and each of them is employed by top European symphony orchestras.
The Afflatus Quintet had its greatest success in September 1997 in the world-known prestigious International Music Competition of the ARD Munich where it obtained the first prize.
The ensemble began to diligently build a concert repertory which is today of respectable breadth and comprised of not only the classic works for wind quintet but also contemporary compositions.
The international career of the Afflatus Quintet started in October 1996 when it took part in a cycle of chamber music concerts at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Since the great success in ARD Munich´s competition they have concertized at home and abroad as much as they can. The Afflatus Quintet performs regularly in the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Music Cycle, as well as in many important venues throughout the Czech republic. The Afflatus Quintet concertizes in Europe, Japan and the U. S. A. and has performed on the festival Prague Spring and in the famous Japanese Suntory Hall in Tokyo. The ensemble also colaborates with the Czech Television and Czech Radio.
The Afflatus Quintet has a great reputation among professionals and the informed musical public. Among others it has won the Award Classic ´97 for “exceptional interpretational mastery, particularly in the music of the twentieth century”, the Award of the Czech Confederation of Chamber Music as the finest chamber ensemble of the season, and the highest honor of the festival “The Young Stage” in Karlovy Vary for best performance.

Members

Roman Novotný – flute (1968)

a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, a professor of the Prague Conservatory, graduated from Academy of Music in Prague where he studied under Prof. Jiri Válek, in 1996 received an honorable mention in the Prague Spring International Competition, in 1988 absolute winner of AMATI Competition, in 1987 winner of the Competition of Conservatories. He performs also in duo with the excellent Czech harpist Jana Bousková.

Jana Brozková – oboe (1968)

a solo oboe player of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, she graduated from the Academy of Music in Prague where she studied under prof. Jirí Mihule. She has received first prize in the European Prize Competition in Zurich, an honorable mention in the 1986 Prague Spring International Competition adn third prize in the same competition in 1991. She is a winner of the Fernand Gillet´s Double Reed Society Competition in Chicago 1997. She is a professor of oboe at the Academy of Music in Prague.

Vojte¹ch Nýdl– clarinet (1972)

a member of the Prague Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, he graduated from the Academy of Music in Prague where he studied under prof. Stepán Koutník. In 1994 he studied with Michel Arrignon at the Conservatoire National Superieur in Paris. He won the first prize at the internazional competition Concertino Praga in 1990, second prize in Amati Kraslice Competition in 1988. He is also a member of the Czech Clarinet Quartet.

Ondrej Roskovec– bassoon (1970)

a member of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, he graduated from the Academy of Music in Prague as a student of prof. Frantis¹ek Herman and prof. Jirí Seidl. From 1989-1993 he was a member of the Czech Nonet. He won the third prize at the Prague Spring International Competition in 1996 and the honorable mention in the same competition in 1991, first prize in AMATI Competition in 1988, first prize in Competition of Conservatories in 1987. He is a professor of bassoon at the Prague Conservatory.

Radek Baborák– French horn (1976)

solo French horn player of the Berliner Philharmoniker from 2003, previously solo horn of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and Bamberger Symphoniker. He studied under Karel Kr¹enek and later under Bedrich Tylsar at the Prague Conservatory. He is top prize winner of the Concertino Praga 1991, third prize in the Prague Spring International Competition 1992, second prize in Geneva 1992, first prize in Markneukirchen 1993 and first prize in ARD Munich 1993.
